Coaching

All SC Royals coaches and assistants are volunteers who give their time for the love of the game and promoting kids’ sports. They are SafeSport trained through USA Field Hockey, and in most cases, parents of players. We come from a mixture of backgrounds and playing experience, and are passionate about doing our best for the kids and creating a fun, safe and solid learning experience.

If you have experience coaching or want to volunteer your help, particularly umpiring, please get in touch using our form.

Steve Beeny

Head Coach and Club Manager
Coach Steve

Steve Beeny is latecomer to field hockey, but is convinced this is a wonderful sport to share with kids in Orange County. Although he played a little in high school in England, it wasn’t until 2017 that he tried it at the adult level, joining the Orange County Tangerines field hockey club along with his two children.

Following some tournament play, he decided to start his own club with the goal of growing youth field hockey in south Orange County and giving more kids in this area a chance to play the sport. The club was established in 2019 and has grown to over 50 players in three age groups, including his son. Steve’s vision is to see the growth of more youth field hockey clubs and high school programs in the area, and for the OC to be the bridge between the San Diego and Moorpark circuits.

Philip Ariza

Coach

Coach Phil

Philip’s children joined South County Royals shortly after the team formed in 2019. Unfamiliar with the sport at the time, both kids jumped into it with enthusiasm, as did their entire family. Philip initially volunteered to assist when needed, and in 2021 was happy to take a more active role in coaching, and assisting with the club.

A camp counselor for 8 years when younger, Philip has served as a volunteer on his kids’ preschool executive board, and more recently the executive board of their PTA. He volunteers his time raising funds, organizing events and programs, helping in their classrooms, and coaching their school’s Kid’s Run the OC programs.

Philip is excited to work with Steve to make SC Royals the premier youth club in Orange County, while giving every athlete the opportunity to achieve success playing field hockey.

Coach Roya

Roya is currently a junior at Sage Hill School. She plays a variety of sports, but field hockey is her favorite! She has been involved with field hockey for seven years, four of those years being in Chicago. Roya first started playing in fifth grade for my middle school, and shortly after joined a club team. She attended Northwestern University’s field hockey camps every summer, and after moving to Orange County, began coaching for Royals.
